What is the significance of the mezuzah?
A mitzvah that reminds residents and visitors of their connection to Judaism and God's protection
Source: Devarim 6:9
In detail
The mezuzah serves as a constant reminder of God's presence and protection over the Jewish home. Every time one passes through a doorway, touching the mezuzah is a gesture of awareness, acknowledging that we live under divine protection and that our home is consecrated to God's service. The letter 'shin' (ש) on the outside of the case stands for 'Shaddai', one of God's names, also interpreted as an acronym for 'Shomer Daltot Yisrael' (Guardian of Israel's Doors).
