What is Sefirat HaOmer (Counting of the Omer)?
A Torah commandment to count 49 days from the second day of Pesach until the eve of Shavuot
Source: Vayikra 23:15-16
In detail
Sefirat HaOmer is the counting of 49 days from the second day of Pesach until Shavuot. Each evening after nightfall, a blessing is recited and the specific day is counted. This period represents the spiritual journey from physical freedom (leaving Egypt) to spiritual freedom (receiving the Torah). It is also a period of semi-mourning (no weddings, haircuts, or music) in memory of Rabbi Akiva's students who died during this time.
