What is the Kol Nidrei prayer?

A special prayer recited at the onset of Yom Kippur to annul vows

    In detail

Kol Nidrei is a solemn declaration recited at the onset of Yom Kippur, before sunset. It annuls personal vows and oaths made inadvertently. The haunting melody and the dramatic setting (Torah scrolls are taken out, the congregation stands) make it one of the most emotionally powerful moments in Jewish liturgy.
