Pesach (Passover) gets its name because God 'passed over' (pasach) the Israelite homes during the tenth plague, the death of the firstborn. The Israelites had marked their doorposts with lamb's blood, and the angel of death skipped their homes. This act of divine protection is the origin of the holiday's name.
