The Western Wall (Kotel HaMa'aravi) is the last remaining retaining wall of the Second Temple complex, built by Herod. It is the closest accessible point to where the Holy of Holies once stood. For nearly 2,000 years it has been the most sacred site of Jewish prayer and pilgrimage. Jews from around the world come to pray at the Wall, and many place written prayers in its ancient stones.
