In 70 CE The Second Temple was destroyed in 70 CE by the Romans under General Titus. This occurred on the 9th of Av: remarkably, the very same date on the Hebrew calendar as the destruction of the First Temple, 656 years earlier. This began nearly 2,000 years of exile.
