When was the First Temple destroyed?

The First Temple, built by King Solomon, was destroyed on the 9th of Av in the Hebrew year 3338, corresponding to 586 BCE, by the Babylonian army of King Nebuchadnezzar. The Temple stood for 410 years. Jerusalem was breached, the Temple vessels were carried off, and the people were exiled to Babylon for 70 years until Cyrus of Persia permitted the return and the building of the Second Temple. The Talmud (Yoma 9b) attributes the destruction to three cardinal sins that were widespread at the time: idolatry, murder, and sexual immorality. The date is mourned every year on Tisha B'Av with a full 25-hour fast, the reading of Eichah (Lamentations), and the customs of mourning.
