Why are we called Israel?
After Jacob's second name, Israel; hence we are called the People of Israel
Source: Bereishit 32:29
In detail
We are called 'Israel' after Jacob's second name. After wrestling with an angel, Jacob was renamed 'Yisrael' meaning 'one who has struggled with God and prevailed' (Genesis 32:29). His descendants became known as 'Bnei Yisrael' (Children of Israel), and the land promised to them became 'Eretz Yisrael' (Land of Israel).
