How many mitzvot are in the Torah?
613 mitzvot (Taryag)
Source: Makkot 23b
In detail
The Torah contains 613 mitzvot (commandments), known in Hebrew as Taryag (the numerical value of תרי"ג). Of these, 248 are positive commandments ('do this'), corresponding to the number of limbs in the body, and 365 are negative commandments ('don't do this'), corresponding to the days of the solar year. Not all are applicable today (many relate to the Temple service).
