    In detail

The Temple (Beit HaMikdash) stood in Jerusalem on the Temple Mount (Har HaBayit), which is the area above and surrounding the Western Wall (Kotel). The First Temple was built by King Solomon around 960 BCE, and the Second Temple was completed in 516 BCE and later expanded by Herod. The Temple was the spiritual center of the Jewish world, where sacrifices were offered and the Divine Presence dwelled.
