How many people are called up to the Torah on Shabbat?

    7 + a 'completing' aliyah called 'Maftir'

    Source: Shulchan Aruch OC 282

    In detail

On Shabbat morning, 7 people are called up for aliyot (Torah readings), plus an 8th called Maftir who also reads the Haftarah. This is the highest number of aliyot — on weekdays it's 3, on holidays 5, on Yom Kippur 6. The number 7 corresponds to the seven days of creation, with Shabbat being the completion.
