1. Creation of the world 2. The Exodus from Egypt Shabbat commemorates two foundational events: (1) Creation: God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh (Genesis 2:1-3), making Shabbat a testimony that God is the Creator. (2) The Exodus from Egypt, as stated in the Deuteronomy version of the Ten Commandments (5:15): 'Remember that you were a slave in Egypt and the Lord brought you out.' Shabbat thus combines cosmic significance with national memory.
