When is it permitted and even a mitzvah to desecrate Shabbat?
In case of danger to life (pikuach nefesh) or even suspected danger to life
Source: Shulchan Aruch OC 328
In detail
Pikuach Nefesh (saving life) overrides virtually all Torah commandments, including Shabbat. If someone's life is in danger — or even possibly in danger — one must violate Shabbat to save them: call an ambulance, drive to a hospital, perform medical procedures. The Torah says 'And you shall live by them' (Leviticus 18:5) — the commandments are meant for living, not for dying. One who rushes to save a life on Shabbat is praised, not blamed.
