In detail
Havdalah ('separation') is a ceremony performed at the end of Shabbat to formally distinguish between the sacred Shabbat and the ordinary weekdays. Just as Kiddush sanctifies the entry of Shabbat, Havdalah marks its departure. It is performed after three stars appear in the sky (tzeit hakochavim), usually about 25 hours after Shabbat began.
