    In detail

The Torah is divided into 54 weekly portions (parashot), one read each Shabbat. Since the Jewish year has about 50 Shabbatot, some weeks have double portions to ensure completion. The cycle begins and ends on Simchat Torah, when the last verses of Deuteronomy and the first verses of Genesis are read consecutively — symbolizing that Torah study never ends.
