What blessing is said before milk? And after?

    Before: Shehakol, after; Borei Nefashot

    Source: Shulchan Aruch OC 204

    In detail

Milk comes from an animal, not from the ground or a tree, so it receives the general blessing 'Shehakol nihyeh bidvaro.' The after-blessing is 'Borei Nefashot.' The same applies to all dairy products: cheese, yogurt, butter: as well as eggs, meat, fish, and any food whose origin is not directly from the earth. The Shehakol blessing serves as a 'catch-all' for any food that doesn't fit into the more specific categories.
