A minyan is a quorum of 10 Jewish men over age 13 required for certain communal prayers and rituals: Torah reading, Kaddish, Kedushah, Priestly Blessing (Birkat Kohanim), and the repetition of the Amidah. The requirement comes from the story of the 10 spies, the Torah calls them an 'edah' (community), establishing 10 as the minimum for a congregation.
