Q: What blessing is said before cake? And after?

Before: Mezonot, after; Me'ein Shalosh (Al HaMichya) Cake and baked goods made from the five grains (wheat, barley, spelt, oats, rye) but that are not 'bread', such as cookies, cakes, and pastries, receive the blessing 'Borei minei mezonot' ('Creator of types of sustenance') before eating. The after-blessing is 'Me'ein Shalosh' (also called 'Al HaMichya'), which is a condensed summary of the three Torah blessings of Birkat HaMazon. The distinction between 'HaMotzi' (bread) and 'Mezonot' (baked goods) depends on the dough's composition, if it contains significant amounts of sugar, oil, or eggs that change its character from bread, it typically falls under Mezonot.
