Q: What is the first thing said upon waking up in the morning?

Modeh Ani... (I give thanks...) Modeh Ani ('I give thanks before You, living and eternal King, for You have mercifully restored my soul within me; Your faithfulness is great') is the very first words spoken each morning upon waking. It is said while still in bed, before even washing hands. This teaches that a Jew's first conscious act is gratitude to God for returning the soul after sleep, which is considered one-sixtieth of death.
