What is the first thing said upon waking up in the morning?

    Modeh Ani... (I give thanks...)

    Source: Shulchan Aruch OC 1

    In detail

Modeh Ani ('I give thanks before You, living and eternal King, for You have mercifully restored my soul within me; Your faithfulness is great') is the very first words spoken each morning upon waking. It is said while still in bed, before even washing hands. This teaches that a Jew's first conscious act is gratitude to God for returning the soul after sleep, which is considered one-sixtieth of death.
