Borei Atzei Besamim (Creator of fragrant trees) When smelling a pleasant fragrance from a tree or woody bush, such as from a rose bush with a woody stem, or cinnamon bark, the blessing is 'Borei atzei besamim' ('Creator of fragrant trees'). Judaism teaches that even pleasant scents deserve acknowledgment of their Creator, extending the practice of blessings beyond food to encompass all sensory enjoyment. The key is identifying whether the aromatic source has a woody, perennial stem (atzei) or is a soft annual herb (isvei).
