What blessing is said before water? And after?

    Before: Shehakol, after; Borei Nefashot

    Source: Shulchan Aruch OC 204

    In detail

Water and other beverages that are not made from grapes receive the blessing 'Shehakol nihyeh bidvaro' ('that everything came into being by His word') before drinking. This is the most general of all food blessings, used for anything that doesn't grow from the ground or trees. After drinking, we say 'Borei nefashot rabot' ('Creator of many souls'), which is the general after-blessing for foods that don't require Me'ein Shalosh or Birkat HaMazon. The Shehakol blessing expresses the idea that God sustains all of creation through His word.
