Why is there a special blessing for wine?

Because of its importance: like bread, a special blessing was established for it

    In detail

Wine was given its own unique blessing ('Borei pri hagafen') due to its elevated status in Jewish life and ritual. Just as bread: the staple food: has its own unique blessing ('HaMotzi'), wine; the staple drink of celebration and sanctification, has its own. The Talmud explains that wine 'gladdens the heart' (Psalms 104:15) and is used to sanctify nearly every major Jewish occasion. No other beverage carries this level of ritual significance.
