What blessing is said before rice? And after?

    Before: Mezonot, after; Borei Nefashot

    Source: Shulchan Aruch OC 208

    In detail

Rice receives 'Mezonot' before eating according to most authorities, because the Shulchan Aruch (Code of Jewish Law) rules that rice has a status similar to grain products. However, the after-blessing is 'Borei Nefashot' (not Me'ein Shalosh), because rice is not one of the five grains (wheat, barley, spelt, oats, rye). This makes rice unique, it's the only food that gets Mezonot before but Borei Nefashot after.
